-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A.-------A.-------Thanking Allah in Islam In different religion, people thanks God in different ways, Christianity not only give thanks to God during Thanksgiving day but also in some other time such as they thanks God for food before every lunch and dinner. In Islam Thanking to Allah, a bit more important of all, I have written below from the verses of Quran which are self descriptive in external meaning. But for internal meaning you have to knock the door of those people who has the knowledge of thsawuf and are the true authority. 1.Thanks to Allah for food. In Surah Bakarah verse 172, Allah says : “O you who believe! eat of the good things that We have provided you with, and give thanks to Allah if Him it is that you serve”. 2.Thanks to Allah for food In Surah An-Nahl verse 114, Allah Says : “Therefore eat of what Allah has given you, lawful and good (things), and give thanks for Allahs favor if Him do you serve.” 3.Thanks To Allah for food In Surah Yasin verse 35, Allah says: “That they may eat of the fruit thereof, and their hands made it not. Will they not, then, give thanks?” 4.Thanks to Allah for the resources In Surah An-Nahl verse 14 Allah Says : “And He it is Who has made the sea subservient that you may eat fresh flesh from it and bring forth from it ornaments which you wear, and you see the ships cleaving through it, and that you might seek of His bounty and that you may give thanks.” 5.Thanks to Allah for five senses In Surah An-Nahl verse 78 Allah says : “And Allah brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers knowing nothing, and gave you hearing and sight and hearts that haply ye might give thanks.” 6.Thanks for Power and livelihood in earth In Surah Al-A’raf verse 10 Allah Says : “And We have given you (mankind) power in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks!” 7.Thanks for bounty for mankind In Surah An-Namal verse 73, Allah says : “Lo! thy Lord is full of bounty for mankind, but most of them do not give thanks.” 8.Thanks for Day and night In Surah Al-Qasas verse 73, Allah Says : “And out of His mercy He has made for you the night and the day, that you may rest therein, and that you may seek of His grace, and that you may give thanks.” 9.Thanks to Parents and Allah In Surah Luqman verse 14, Allah says : “And we have enjoined on man to be good to his parents -his mother bears him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning takes two years - and said, `Give thanks to ME and thy parents. Unto ME is the final return;” 10.Thanking Allah for your own soul In Surah Luqman verse 12, Allah says : “And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth - Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise.” 11.Thanks for breathed Allah’s spirit into us. In Surah Sijdah verse 9, Allah says : “Then He made him complete and breathed into him of His spirit, and made for you the ears and the eyes and the hearts; little is it that you give thanks”. 12.Thanks for the Grace of Allah as he give us religion. In Surah Yusuf verse 38 Allah says : “And I follow the religion of my fathers, Ibrahim and Ishaq and Yaqoub; it beseems us not that we should associate aught with Allah; this is by Allahs grace upon us and on mankind, but most people do not give thanks” 13.Thanks for Guidance of Allah through Ramadan and Quran In Surah Bakarah verse 185 Allah Says : “The month of Ramazan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction; therefore whoever of you is present in the month, he shall fast therein, and whoever is sick or upon a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire for you difficulty, and (He desires) that you should complete the number and that you should exalt the greatness of Allah for His having guided you and that you may give thanks.” 14.Thanks for the Grace of Allah for Odu and prayer In Surah Al-Maidah Verse 6 Allah Says : “O ye who believe! When ye rise up for prayer, wash you faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. And if ye are unclean, purify yourselves. And if ye are sick or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have had contact with women, and ye find not water, then go to clean, high ground and rub your faces and your hands with some of it. Allah would not place a burden on you, but He would purify you and would perfect His grace upon you, that ye may give thanks.” 15.Thanks for A’kherat In Surah Bani Israel verse 19, Allah says : “And whoever seeks the A’kherat and strives for it as it deserves, and is a believing person, then to those what they have sought is given in thanks.” 16.Thanks for Allah’s A’yat In Surah Luqman verse 31, Allah says “Seest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the Grace of God?- that He may show you of His A’yat? Verily in this are A’yats for all who constantly persevere and give thanks.” 17.Most of the people do not thank for the Grace of Allah and lies about the day of resurrection In Surah Yunus verse 60 Allah Says : “surely Allah is the Lord of And what will be the thought of those who forge lies against Allah on the day of resurrection? Most grace towards men, but most of them do not give thanks.” 18.More reward for thanking and punishment for not thanking. In Surah Ibrahim verse 7 Allah Says : “And when your Lord proclaimed: If ye give thanks, I will give you more; but if ye are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire.” 19.Thanks like worshiper of Allah In Surah As-Jumar verse 66, Allah says : “Nay, but worship God, and be of those who give thanks.” 20.Reward of Thanks In Surah Al-Qamar verse 35, Allah says : “As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who giveth thanks.” 21. Serving only Allah is thanking Allah In Surah Al-An-Kabut verse 17, Allah says : “Ye serve instead of Allah only idols, and ye only invent a lie. Lo! those whom ye serve instead of Allah own no provision for you. So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him, and give thanks unto Him, (for) unto Him ye will be brought back.” 22. Remembering Allah is thanking Allah In Surah Bakarah verse 152 Allah Says: “Therefore remember Me, I will remember you. Give thanks to Me, and reject not Me.” There is no controversy in thanking Allah/God in any religion, in every religion and even in Islam, people give thanks to Allah in different way and in different time, all the ways are good, like giving food to poor, feeding relatives, neighbors, villagers and do festivals etc. But the best way of thanking Allah is mentioned only is Quran and taught by Muhammad (S.A). Thanking each other, helping each other is a human character or good character of a human being, who do more of these are a good human. And thanking Allah/God is character of God fearer. In Quran Allah shows the way how to thank Allah, which are Serving/worshiping Allah and Remembering Allah. Remebering Allah is of different kind, remembering by name, by attribute, by neamut and lastly remembering by vision.(Hazrat Khawaza Bazlur Rahman Zulqarnin Uwaise explane’s in his writing SALAT and VISION OF ALLAH). Remembering by vision is the best one. Serving/worshiping Allah means, you are the servant and Allah is the Lord, and you are fulfilling His all orders and requirements without any argument/views of your own. A good servant is always present in front of his Lord (means you see him he sees you) in fulfilling His order/requirements.( Hazrat Khawaza Bazlur Rahman Zulqarnin Uwaise wrote a chapter about Serving Allah in his book “Imaner Ishara ” in details). Quran emphasize thanking three persons, 1. Allah. 2. Parents and 3. Prophet Muhammad (S.A). B.----------- Thanking parents About thanking parents, I already mentioned above and Hazrat Khawaza Bazlur Rahaman Zulqarnin Uwaisy wrote a good chapter about parents in his book “Imaner Ishara”. C.------------------ Thanks to Prophet Muhammad (S.A). Most of the people do not know or do not give Thanks to Prophet Muhammad (S.A). References from the Quran and Hadith are given below explaining why and how thanks has to be given to Prophet Muhammad (S.A) In the Quran Surah As-Shura(42) verse 23, Allah ask Muhammad (S.A) to declared a good news to believers as Meaning “That is of which Allah gives the good news to His servants, (to) those who believe and do good deeds. Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives; and whoever earns good, We give him more of good therein; surely Allah is Forgiving, Grateful”.—42:23 This verse commands the Muslims to love / behave good to the near relatives of prophet Muhammad (S.A) (ie. members of Ahl ul Bayt) if they want to repay the Holy Prophet for his toils of prophet hood, so that they should follow the Ahl ul Bayt in word and deed, because they have been thoroughly purified by Allah Himself, because they are the truthful, because they are the custodians of the word of Allah, because they alone know the true interpretation of the guidance sent for all mankind. Ibn Hajr in Sawa-iq, chapter 11, page 160 and Ibn Sad in Tabaqat in the account of Umar bin Khattab have accepted that the near relatives of the Holy Prophet are the members of Ahl ul Bayt (Ali, Fatima, Hasan,Husain). The same opinion is found in Tafsir Kashaf, Sahih Muslim, Musnad ibn Hanbal and Tafsir Durr al Manthur. It is reported that the ansar, who gave asylum to muhajirin, began to take pride in the role they played in the promotion of the mission of the Holy Prophet. Ibn Abbas and some other immigrants felt unhappy and complained to the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet, then, reminded the ansar that it was because of him they were saved from the accursed dirt of polytheism, and it was he who showed them the right path of salvation. The ansar realised their folly, avowed to put whatever they had at his disposal and follow every command given to them. Then this verse 23 of surah As Shura (42:23) was revealed. A large number of narratives reported by the most reliable authorities of the Islamic history prove that this verse was revealed in Madina after the births of Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn. Some Commentator tried to mislead the believers by changing the meaning of Qurba (near relatives) in this verse 42:23 and referring following verses (AIAnam:90, Yusuf: 104, Al-Muminun:72, Al-Furqan:57, Saba:47, Suad:86, At-Tur: 40, AI Qalam:46.) and (Yunus:72; Hud: 29, 51; Ash-Shuara:109,127,145,164,l80) from Quran against the verse 42:23. And trying to say that there is no need of thanking Prophet Muhammad (S.A) for his handful work through out his whole life. But I would like to say there is no contradiction is Allah sayings. One verse of Quran can not be against the other verses of Quran. For your convenience I put down all the verses with little comment below. 1. Surah AIAnam 6 verse 90 Meaning “They are those whom Allâh had guided. So follow their guidance. Say: ”No reward I ask of you for this. It is only a reminder for the ’Alamîn.” –6:90 Here if you read from verse 88 to 91, where Allah is introducing his prophets saying : “Ishâque (Isaac) and Ya’qûb (Jacob), each of them We guided, and before him, We guided Nûh (Noah), and among his progeny Dawûd (David), Sulaimân (Solomon), Ayub (Job), Yûsuf (Joseph), Mûsa (Moses), and Hârûn (Aaron). And Zakariyâ (Zachariya), and Yahya (John) and ’Iesa (Jesus) and Iliyâs (Elias) then Allah said “each one of them was of the righteous And Ismâ’il (Ishmael) and Al-Yas’â (Elisha), and Yûnus (Jonah) and Lout (Lot), and each one of them We preferred above the ’Alamîn” In later verses Allah said “. But if these disbelieve therein then, indeed We have entrusted it to a people who are not disbelievers therein.” From those verses it is also clear that this verse 90 is for disbelievers, so Allah and Muhammad does not need any reward or thanks from disbelievers. 2. Surah Yusuf 12 verse 104 Meaning “And no reward you ask of them (those who deny your Prophethood) for it, it is no less than a Reminder and an advice unto the ’Alamîn.”—(12:104) If you read the verse from 102 to 104, you will understand that this verse was about unbeliever and conspirators. 3. Surah Al-Muminun 23 verse 71 to 72 Meaning “And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.” —(23:71) Or is it that you (O Muhammad SAW) ask them for some wages? But the recompense of your Lord is better, and He is the Best of those who give sustenance –(23:72) This verse is also for those who turn away from Allah’s reminder, so no question of thanks or gratefulness is expected from them. 4. Surah Al-Furqan: 25 verse 55 to 57 Meaning “And they (disbelievers, polytheists, etc.) worship besides Allâh, that which can neither profit them nor harm them, and the disbeliever is ever a helper against his Lord.” —(25:55) And We have sent you only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner –(25:56) Say: ”No reward do I ask of you for this, save that whosoever wills, may take a Path to his Lord.-(25:57) If you read previous verse 55 (ie. 55 to 57) then you will clearly understand that this verse 56 is also for disbelievers, so for disbelievers there is no question of thanks to prophet. Allah and prophet do not what any reward or thanks from disbelievers. 5. Surah Saba 34 verse 46 to 53 Say (O Muhammad SAW): ”Whatever wage I might have asked of you is yours. My wage is from Allâh only. and He is Witness over all things.” If you read from verse 46 to 54 in surah 34 it is as like other verses that verse 47 is reviled for disbelievers. 6. Surah Suad 38 verse 86 Meaning “Say: ”No wage do I ask of you for this, nor am I one of the Mutakallifûn (those who pretend and fabricate things which do not exist)”.-(38-86) If you cheerfully see from verse 71 to 88 you will understood that the incident was regarding the Satan and followers of Satan. So no question of thanks or gratefulness would be expected from Satan . 7. Surah Yunus 10 verse 72 Meaning “But if you turn away, then no reward have I asked of you, my reward is only from Allâh, and I have been commanded to be one of the Muslims.”-(10-:72) This verse is also for Non believers who turns away from Allah and Muhammad (S.A) referring the story of Prophet Nuh (A.S). Allah and prophet do not want any reward from them who turn away. 8. Surah Hud 11 verse 29 Meaning ”And O my people! I ask of you no wealth for it, my reward is from none but Allâh. I am not going to drive away those who have believed. Surely, they are going to meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people that are ignorant.—(11:29) if you read previous verse 28, it is clear that this verse is for Nooh (A.S) and his ignorant people. In this verse Nooh (A.S) says to his ignorant people that he do not ask any reward for his preaching, which does not mean that you can not thanks Muhammad (S.A) or Nooh (S.A) for there works. 9. Surah Hud 11 verse 51 Meaning ”O my people I ask of you no reward for it. My reward is only from Him, Who created me. Will you not then understand? –(11:51) If you read from verse 50 to 55, it will be clearly understood that this verse 51 is a statement from Prophet Hud (A.S). Thanking and reward are not the same think. 10. Surah Ash-Shuara’ 26 verse 109, 127, 145, 164, 180 In Surah 26, Verse 109 – is a statement for Prophet Nuah (A.S), Verse 127 –is a statement of Prophet Hud (A.S), Verse 145 – is a statement of Prophet Saleh (A.S), Verse 164 –is a statement of Prophet Lot (A.S), Verse 180 – is a statement of Prophet Shoeb (A.S) All prophets above said to disbelievers of their own nations that They do not want any rewards for there work, They will get reward from Allah. The all above verses does not cancel or does not go against the verse 23 of Surah Ash Shura (42:23), because verse 42:23 is not for disbelievers, It is a good news from Allah to the believers / followers of Prophet Muhammad (S.A) that Prophet Muhammad (S.A) does not want any reward from you except love / good behavior for his near relatives. That means among the believers, God fearer, true Muslims who wants to give thanks or wants to be grateful to Prophet Muhammad (S.A) for his work, they should love Prophet’s near relative and Ahl ul Bayet. The Hadith and narrations of commentators of the Holy Quran, which is related to the verse 42:23 from different sources are given below Ibn Abbas narrated: When the above verse (42:23) was revealed, the companions asked: O the Messenger of Allah! Who are those near kin whose love Allah has made obligatory for us? Upon that the Prophet (S.A) said: Ali, Fatimah, and their two sons. He (S.A) repeated this sentence thrice. When this verse was revealed, someone said: Messenger of Allah, who are the kin whose love is obligatory for us? The Prophet (S.A)) replied: Ali,Fatima, and her two children. This narration has been reported by Ibn Hajar in his al-Sawaiq al-Muhriqah, Al-Thalabi. Al-Suyuti in al-Durr al-Manthur. Abu Nuaym in Hilyat al-awliya. al-Hamawayni al-Shafii in Faraid al-Samtayn It is written in Al-Sawaiq al-Muhriqah by Ibn Hajar that Hazrat Ali (A.S) said:It is stated in the (Quranic chapter) Ha Mim that no one upholds our love save the faithful ones. He then read: Say: `No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin, and if any one earns any good, We shall give him an increase of good in respect thereof; for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, most ready to appreciate (service). (42: 23) It has also been reported in the same book that Hazrat Hassan (A.S) gave a speech in which he said: Surely we are among the Ahlul-Bayt whose love and support were made incumbent (upon the faithful) by Allah, the Exalted. He¬-- Glory be to Him, said: Say: `No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin, and if arty one earns any good, We shall give him an increase of good in respect thereof. For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, most ready to appreciate (service).(42: 23) Hazrat Husain (A.S) replied to the Syrian who said to him while he was a prisoner of the Umayyads in Damascus: Praise be to Allah Who killed you..etc. Then he (A.S) said: Havent you read the verse: Say: `No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin, and if any-one earns any good, We shall give him an increase of good in respect thereof; For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, most ready to appreciate(service). (42: 23) Jabir Ibn Abdullah said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (S.A) and said: Mohammad, present Islam to me. The Prophet replied: `Bear witness that there is no God but Allah, to whom an associate does not exist; and that Muhammad is the slave and Messenger of Allah. The Bedouin said: `Do you require any reward from me (for bringing me to Islam)? He (S.A) answered: `No, save loving the nearest of kin. The Bedouin then asked: `Mine or yours? The Prophet (S.A) said: `My kin. The Bedouin said: `Let me pay allegiance to you, and may the curse of Allah be on those who do not love you and your kin. Thus he (PBUH) said: Amen. This narration has been reported by Al-Kinji in Kefayat At-Talib p.31. So in verse 42:23 Allah ordered believers to love or pay respect or do good behave to the near relative of Prophet Muhammad (S.A) as a thanks or as a reward for bringing Quran and religion of Islam and teaching us about Allah. In conclusion a true Muslim, a God fearer always thanks and grateful to (1) ALLAH by remembering, worshiping and serving Him [hazir/nazir], (2) Prophet Muhammad(S.A) by loving his near relatives and (3) Parents by loving and taking care of them in such a way that they would not say even “uf”.
