Thanking you With heartiest and highest regards Umendra Dutt ======================================= Conference on ‘Mainstreaming Agro-Ecology ’ Organized during OFAI Biannual Conference, Chandigarh 1st and 2nd March, 2015 Agro-ecological approaches are increasing being recognised as the way forward for the food, nutritional security and livelihood security of the small and marginal farmers across the world. In this approach, ecological practices to increase productivity, improve soil fertility and address climate change go hand in hand with the empowerment of small-scale family farmers, both men and women. While there are thousands of models across India and lakhs of farmers adopting such practices, mainstream agricultural research and extension systems are yet sceptic about agro-ecological approaches. This scepticism is hindering the investments in research and further scaling up of the existing models. This is context, Organic Farmers Association of India (OFAI) in collaboration with Indian Society of Agro-Ecology (ISAE), British Agro-Ecology Society and Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) are organising a two day conference on ‘Mainstreaming Agro-Ecology’ on 1st and 2nd of March, 2015 at Chandigarh. The main objectives of the conference are · To provide a forum for taking stock of the current state of science and practices of Agro-ecology, as well as for initiatives across the country and other parts of the globe · To understand the contributions of agro-ecological approaches towards economic, social and environmental sustainability of small and marginal farmers · To develop a policy framework for consideration of state and national governments This will be the occasion for agroecological initiatives from across the country to publically display their work to a large audience of scientists, civil society members, members of the private sector and policy makers. Structure of the conference The conference will have five sessions and each session will have two invited papers and three contributed papers. In each session one paper would be from the scientific community from their research and learning and the second paper would be from an experienced farmer. The conference will also have 50 papers for poster presentation and all the abstracts would be published.
