------- The Board of Kenya Rugby Union C/o Acting Chief Executive Officer Rugby Union of East Africa [RFUEA] Ground Nairobi 17-12-2014 Dear all, RE: Resignation from post of Chairman, Kenya Rugby Union With immediate effect, I have resigned from the position of Chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union. I am glad and proud to have served our game and country for close to four years. My efforts went into developing the game towards a world class status as well as its expansion throughout the country. I will always be very satisfied with my contribution and fond of all those in our country and abroad who gave me support in achieving the goals. The events of recent past, however, compel me to vacate the position because I feel my agenda of driving the game further was being derailed. Most of all, in my opinion, some of the Board members’ integrity was not beyond reproach, threatening to bring the game into disrepute. In the first two years of my tenure there was remarkable pulling together towards one goal by the Board and it was the time when our game took tremendous strides, including massive support by sponsors and epic performance, especially by the Kenya Sevens that reached the semi-finals of the Sevens Rugby World Cup as well finishing 5th overall in the IRB Sevens World Series. After mid-term elections, things were never the same. This culminated in this year’s serious questions by sponsors about some Board members involvement in grave issues of conflict of interests in the supplying of kit to the KRU and fraternity, questionable procurement of airline tickets worth tens of millions of shillings outside established KRU channels, questionable hotel accommodation contracts, and many other inflated bills and cases of unbecoming language to downright insulting language directed at senior management of some of our sponsors. I was committed to a full probe into these matters and towards a correction. But the democratic process of running the Board benefited possible culprits who could influence part of the membership to scuttle those attempts. But I persisted. This will remain on record and a blot on the suspects. Just recently another perfectly-in-order effort to audit finances of the KRU was blatantly shot down; the bona fide internal auditors -- approved at an Annual General Meeting by KRU members -- being warned, in writing, of dire consequences should they have carried out the audit. After wide consultation among the rugby playing fraternity that now spreads to approximately 60 clubs countrywide, I championed the birth of new constitutional order aimed at inclusivity of regional organizations and also granting them semi-autonomy entrenched in the constitution. This was scuttled at the Board. There was also considerable Membership clamor for entrenching the positions of the KRU Chief Executive Officer [CEO] and Chief Finance Office [CFO], outlining manner of their hiring through competitive search from the highest possible calibre of relevant professionals. This is ongoing and membership should keep vigil. With the foregoing; the deliberate opposition to consensus, decisions contrary to what in my conviction are not in the best interest of our game may continue to be taken and I will not be prepared to rubber-stamp them. Sincere thanks go to very many people, who supported KRU during my tenure; boosted the game to dizzy heights and made my life a real joy. They were corporate and individuals. I will cherish the memories forever. It is a long list which I must put down because they were wonderful people, almost all who became my lifetime friends because of my involvement in heading Kenya rugby.
