----- MAAS - LEK ----- Were starting our trip up the Rhine with a jaunt through Hollands northen sections of this amazing river - the Maas and Lek rivers. It certainly is a changeable area with everything from peaceful wetlands to bustling cities and I only feel disappointed that I cant share more of it with you. As always Ive included clues to several locations of interest but thats not the only way to win a prize..., any comment, picture or answer will win you a wonderful animal for your zoo... 1/ In 1586 this was leased to Dirk Ariensz. Bisdommer and Son, the first permanent inhabitant of this former island. 2/ During the Middle Ages, as a free city, this place was a haven for felons and escaped serfs. Of the three castles built during the towns history one was said to be one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands although only a 17th-century brick gate and water-pump remain 3/ Nicknamed Silver City this place is home of the International Silver School as well a many small scale clock makers. A beautiful example of large clockwork can be found on its the medieval town hall. 4/ Originally Leckerlant in 1280 this town became new because of what other town? 5/ A place for children - To drain the local area, a system of 19 windmills was built here around 1740, and have a special standing that they were given in 1997.
