Also, as per the last advisory board meeting, the CAWP were supposed to be finished in October - so I will assume you are just wrapping up the finalities on them and will have them available as well very soon. As you are aware, the weather has been exceedingly harsh this winter and many people want to know what standards of care exist for the animals in holding besides being told there is a “rock at one facility they can hide behind. Having a uniform standard of shelter and weather related care will go a long way toward assuring a wary public that the BLM has the animals health and welfare as a priority in their management. I will definitely pursue the Directors Challenge costs for you. Earlier in the week, I believe I heard that our 2013 budget costs figures were now completed so may be able to finally give you all or most of your earlier budget request. The shut-down and holidays really screwed up their normal end-of-year process. BLM is still actively working with UC Davis on the CAWP. I have personally provided some assistance to them for visuals for their training development. So, Im hopeful we will have more to share this year. Thank you. Also, I have not heard on the Directors Challenge by Sally Spencer, if you could pursue that, I appreciate it. If you get a chance in the near future to send me some info, please do. It appears Victoria McCullough is willing to accommodate the provision of shelter to holding, and again, I am willing to start a national fundraiser for such purposes, if it helps, as mentioned to BLM several time in last years correspondence. I am currently fostering two young wild horses. Having been rounded up, ripped from their families, terribly traumatized and being petrified of humans...they adjust slowly and they clearly prefer the protection of their openly accessible stalls during the extreme cold winds Colorado is currently experiencing - 100 mph gusts, and snow storms. They seek out protection because they can. I and many others firmly believe that all equines in holding merit the same standards - access to some type of shelter - on a larger scale, which is a challenge, but it can be done. Either by erecting canvas canopies such as the burros are permitted to in Ridgecrest, or by considering the current designs over hay at PVC for horses as well. Also, I had recent phone conversations with Dr. Carolyn Stull, and am hoping to see good progress in her work towards more humane and acceptable SOP and CAWP standards, and gathers. I am waiting to hear back on the current SOP / CAWP progress, audits and assessment procedures. Thank you for your time, happy New Year. Monika Courtney
