- Catherine Smitko - you provided some tremendous memories today - do you recall those blue votive candles you gave me - oh a little while ago - Im not sure when - theyre more specifically - a darkish periwinkle - theyd been sitting here waiting for the right moment - and the moment came today - you see - I finally got my ass up - after convalescing and martyring for the past week - and decided to do some hobbling-around cleaning - I burned one of the candles while doing so - I dont know what scent they are called by the store where you purchased them - but to me - they are wayback-head-shop scented candles - just enough patchouli and vanilla and incensy trippiness to take me back - to a head shop on Cicero Avenue - in the old neighborhood - when I was still in grade school - a time when all your friends are pretty much the same age - oh it was a mesmerizing place this head shop - we were too afraid to go inside - and so we contented ourselves by staring in the window - at the psychedelia - that was - until the day the waterbed appeared - yes - the shop had placed a waterbed in the front window - and one of the girls who worked at the store would sometimes hang out - on the waterbed - this girl - tall - skinny - long brown hair parted in the middle - hanging almost to her waist - in jeans and a cream bohemian shirt - this girl - caught us staring - one day - and invited us in to try out the bed - to hang out with her on the bed - yes we said yes - even though I was scared shitless - it was my first time in a head shop - I kept thinking they - whoever they were - were going to make me high - and that this place was truly dangerous - still - we lobbed ourselves onto the bed - and oohed and ahhed - I remember looking at the girl who invited us in - and thinking - shell probably die like that girl in Go Ask Alice -
