-Peripherals such as printers, plotters, modems, can be shared among many different users which save money and time. - Terminals are cheaper than stand alone PCs. - Software can be shared among different users. - Communication across the network is cheap and fast. - A user can log on to a computer anywhere on the network and access their work files from the file server. - It is much faster to install an application once on a network and copy it across the network to every workstation - The network manager can allocate usernames and passwords to all users to prevent unauthorized access Disadvantages (Any two) - Cabling can be expensive to install and replace. - A fault with the server will prevent the whole network from working - Security measures are needed to restrict access to the network - May cause traffic jams - The technical skills needed to manage a network are much higher than working on a stand alone computer ii) Hub: Connect all computers in a network to each other. All nodes receive transmission Switch: Only intended node receives transmission Bridge: Connect two or more LANs together. Segment the network on MAC addresses Router: -Connect two or more LANs together. -Network is segmented by IP address -Connect internal networks to the internet iii) Type of network Advantages Disadvantages LAN -The reliability of network is high because the failure of one computer in the network does not effect the functioning for other computers. -Addition of new computer to network is easy. -High rate of data transmission is possible. -Peripheral devices like magnetic disk and printer can be shared by other computers. - If the communication line fails, the entire network system breaks down.
