01/14/2015 9:55 AM Organizers of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon have decided to begin this years race near Two Harbors. The race will begin Jan. 25 at the Highway 2 checkpoint, which is at a gravel pit just outside Two Harbors. Race Director Alex Angelos said trail conditions in the area have improved to allow the race to begin at that point. Organizers had also been considering starting the race in Finland, Minn., after determining that the usual start at Duluth East High School was not feasible due to a lack of snow. This years marathon will be 319 miles, compared with the original 384 miles. Organizers say the length will still allow mushers to use the Beargrease as a qualifier for the Iditarod race in Alaska. Spectators will be welcome at the start point at Noon to meet the mushers, with the race beginning at 2 p.m. Spectators will also be able to purchase race merchandise and food before the race begins.
