01.9.2013 TALE OF A GOVINDGARH TIGER, WHO WAS A VICTIM OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION Part I The Govindgarh forests of Rewa, Vindhya Preadesh, where in 1950, Martand Singh, the last Maharaja of Rewa, captured the first living white tiger, are now in a state of utter neglect and environmental degradation. Similarly, the Govindgarh Palace, once known for the rearing of the white tigers, is now almost a forgotten place. The people could not even imagine that this part of the Kaimore Range, was ever been trodden by the tigers and other wild animals. Moreover, looking over the miserable state of the forests, they never thought in dream that they would ever hear of a tiger again. But surprisingly, in fag end of t 1986, from nowhere, suddenly, there descended a tiger. For almost three months, from the last week if December, till middle of March 1987, the people of the Govindgarh Plateau, lived almost under seize of a tiger. The first report of human killing came on December 1st when the tiger made a woman, named Bitani its first victim in forest of village Papara. The woman had gone to the forest to collect fire wood, when the tiger pounced upon her and dragged her away into the denser part of the forest. The half-eaten body was of the women found by a Charwaha (animal keeper) the next day. Was the woman was an only victim? To be continued
