COUNSELLING VOCABULARY The following vocabulary is used extensively in counselling. EMPATHY The ability to perceive the client’s experiences and feel the client’s emotions, thus providing a base of emotional understanding. POSITIVE REGARD Acceptance of the client as a worthwhile person, thus demonstrating a sense of personal warmth and caring. GENUINENESS The ability and willingness of counsellors to be real, sincere and honest about themselves and their clients. CONCRETENESS The ability to be accurate, clear and specific in response to the client. CONFRONTATION The ability to bring to the attention of the client, in a concrete manner, reality as the counsellor perceives it. This must be done in a constructive and positive style. CONTRACT The commitment the client and counsellor are asked to make to desired goals, mutually arranged between the client and the counsellor. ADVANCED EMPATHY The ability to perceive and reflect back to the client implied facts and feelings, thus providing a base of in-depth emotional understanding. IMMEDIACY The ability to bring to the surface what is happening between the counsellor and the client in the relationship. SELF DISCLOSURE The revelation by the counsellor of his/her own thoughts, own experiences, which might be useful to the client. Please Like and Share it.
