09/23/2014.......[SOLAR-POWERED STREET LIGHTS].......CITY NEEDS P31.6-M TO CONVERT 4,800 STREET LIGHTS TO SOLAR-POWERED ONES. EVEN IF SECTIONAL BLACKOUTS CONTINUE, THE ENTIRE CITY WILL BE WELL LIT UP WITH THE SOLAR-POWERED LIGHTS. A WELL-LIT STREET IS A DETERRENCE TO CRIMES. The city of Zamboanga has about 4,800 street lightposts. The solar-powered street light featured here costs about $150.00 each. Now, multiply that by 4,800 (number of street lightposts) and you get a total of $720,000. At the present exchange rate of $1 - P44....it would cost the city P31.6-MILLION to light up each and every light post in the city. It means that even if the sectional blackouts continue----the streets of the city will be well-lighted. Well-lighted streets are top deterrence to crimes, according to police studies in the US. ------------------- EDITORS NOTES: The City government spends P3.5-MILLION a month for lighting up our city streets---or between P40-P50-MILLION a year. By converting to solar-powered street lights...the city will get a return of its investment in just one year! ============
