1/9/16 Pleasant sunny morning. My duty is changed today - TopicsExpress

1/9/16 Pleasant sunny morning. My duty is changed today from No. 2 relief to a split duty, which commences at 1 pm to 5 pm and 6 pm to 10 pm. I think I will copy here my letter to Miss Weeds as it contains a few ideas which I have been able to form, on account of long contact with the world and in that respect is interesting to myself. Dear Miss Weeds, Many thanks for your long interesting letter, yes I remember Mr.Brown well, quite a decent sort of fellow. I have always thought him to be too. No, I do not receive the Record now. Am afraid that am rather lax regarding P.G. affairs of late. I was greatly surprised to hear of the whereabouts of Mr. Brown and particularly his new appointment. I suppose his wife is with him too eh? It is very good of you to invite us to the castle. Perhaps fortune will be kind enough to permit of the realisation of such a pleasure. Many thanks also for the photos, am returning all except yours, which I would like to keep if I may. Re the Kitchins lines I can only say that the sentiment therein expressed is really and truly the undisguised opinion and belief of every Arab indeed the same may be said of all natives and foreigners who live under British domain, with regard to your own very interesting lines of which you ask me to comment upon, I would like to say at once, that am afraid they touch upon a subject, which lies deeply buried and firmly embedded in the life and affairs of the human kind. I might indeed go further and add, even in the life all things which live. If only such a subject could be reached by all or even by a few, the world would at once become enlightened to an ideal state of existence. I am afraid I could not possibly give you much satisfaction if I attempted to probe the impenetrable darkness, which shrouds the source and workshop of life. Have you read The Road Menders, as your lines remind me of the book, which is written is somewhat a similar vein. Personally I have no faith in maxims and set no store by them. They may all perhaps contain a germ of truth, but when two are placed side by side they jar horribly. There is no fixed order of things for any one of us, because there are no likes. In fact, but for this life would certainly be much more easier, as of course then we should entertain a common understanding with each other. Those who meet with so called success in life are individuals who have been born in a grove of natural circumstances, particularly suited to their particular temperament and aspirations. Success obtained in any other way is unnatural and unreal. It is moreover merely apparent and is short lived, in so far as effecting materially the under current of human affairs, although thereby they may be temporarily disturbed. I will not continue further as the subject is beyond me it is difficult to convey with coherence ones convictions on such a matter without explaining minutely and explicitly all the small details involved, which is a matter as I have said, quite beyond me. etc. etc. 2/9/16 Dull close morning. Received a letter from my wife. Obtained a new pair of braces and sock yesterday evening from the quartermaster, need a new pair of boots also badly, but he has not my size in stock. My present pair I have worn through Egypt and Gallipoli. Spent morning at Pont-Noyelle. Wrote a letter to Bill also to my Aunt Ada.
