1.BA (Hons) Contemporary Crafts - the University’s most costly - TopicsExpress

1.BA (Hons) Contemporary Crafts - the University’s most costly and space intensive subject area with, currently, a relatively low graduate-level employability rate. We cannot maintain the course’s heavy space utilisation and intensely process-led curriculum without significant cross-subsidy from other subject areas - something we are not prepared to do. There has also been a decline in applications to crafts courses nationwide, which would make continuing investment in the subject area difficult to justify, cross-subsidised or not. How are they quantifying graduate employability? Most people I know who graduated from the course, and are using the skill set learned there are self-employed artist makers. Many of them are still here in Cornwall adding to the dynamic arts community that the university should be striving to retain links with in more than just a lip-service way. What exactly is wrong with an intensely process-led curriculum? Surely this is something to be celebrated? A decline in applications nationwide doesnt mean a decline in applications in Falmouth, as proven by the burgeoning 1st year. There will always be a place in education for courses like Contemporary Crafts, so why not make that place Falmouth in the heart of the largest artistic community outside of London? Plymouth feel they can run a similar course just up the road but people chose to come here, to Falmouth. How long until Falmouth University is just another uni with the same set of courses and the only unique point being a surf board on the prospectus? As for the courses heavy space utilisation it is only using the space designed specifically for it by the architects and the funding that built the place came from the EU based around these needs. What on earth does a Games Academy have to do with Cornwall & its sense of place? You could literally lock most game writers in a warehouse on an industrial estate in Slough and as long as there was a steady stream of coffee, pizza and energy drinks alongside a comfy chair and superfast broadband they wouldnt care where they were based.
