1 Corinthians 3:5–6, Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. The biggest complaint that I have against our election process is that it has become a popularity contest. The credentials of a candidate seem to matter less than the looks, promises, and personality of a candidate. We live in a time where the person running for office who has the most funds has the biggest advantage, as he is able to influence the most people. Unfortunately that same can be said for the church today. When making the determination of a church to attend; most people cast their vote according to the personality of the pastor and not the leading of the Lord. I understand that the Lord uses the personality of a pastor to make a connection with people, but it is when a personality is considered above content that there is a problem. We should never sacrifice or compromise the teaching of the word of God to have our ears tickled by someone not rooted in the truth. The Apostle Paul understood that he was a theologian and church planter and that Apollos was an eloquent teacher but what really mattered was the message. He warned that those who connected themselves with the messenger instead of the message were carnal. God has chosen to reveal Himself through the preaching of the word of God, and when the word is preached it is a holy occasion. This should be a time when man decreases so that he would not hinder God increasing in the hearts of the people. Christianity is not to be a popularity contest but a singularity passion to hear from God. Jeremiah 17:7–8, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
