1. Had the steam engine been invented by the Ancient Romans, which was possible, the Industrial Revolution could have started many centuries earlier. 2. What things could we develop now that would allow us to jump over 300 years of slow painful development: --Instant interpersonal telepathy eliminating most uses of language? --Communication (enhanced Internet) replacing physical transportation by virtual transportation? --Perfectly programmed political systems? 3. Or maybe the fast expanding Internet IS that jump we are currently experiencing. Maybe we are all suddenly timetravelling much faster than humans can absorb, and we dont realize our velocity thus missing important steps, especially those evolving the necessary ethical knowledge to cope with our fast approaching New New New World. 4. Right now I would settle for a self-cleaning house, but that is probably a great leap forward less realistic than world peace.
