#1 I hold both a bachelors and masters in social work from WashU. I worked two jobs to afford fees left over from taking out a bunch of loans. My classmates frequently spent more on a night of drinking and cab rides than I made in a month. I furnished my living spaces out of furniture people just threw away. I lived in a triple room and then became an RA in order to afford housing. While I had many great experiences at WashU, there were also a lot of challenges related to opportunities that continually had hidden fees. While I could access classes, there was a lot more to an education that folks seemed to think was accessible to everyone (student organizations, study abroad, internships, social life, etc.) that really was not. It is important to not only work to admit students of greater socioeconomic diversity but to provide support and appropriate information as well as campus culture when students arrive. Upon arriving at the Brown School, I thought things would be different, as it is a social work program. I was again caught off guard by the idea that everyone would be able to afford expensive training programs and other hidden costs.
