1. Phở Vietnam’s best dishes list would not be completed without Phở (pronounced “Fuh”). It is the most famous and best loved Vietnamese’s noodle soup among native as well as foreigners. The dish consists of fresh rice noodles, broth, thinly sliced green onion and beef (Phở bò) or chicken (Phở Gà). You can also try eating Phở with Vietnamese Cruller (this is highly recommended from me! Some people may think its too fatty but once you taste it, trust me, you will not be able to resist the crunchy and delicious taste of the cruller). Phở is cheap (around $2), tasty and widely available(you can enjoy Phở everywhere, whether it is a street food restaurant or a luxurious one) and at all hours The best Phở can be found at: Phở Lý Quốc Sư – opposite to 33 Nhà Chung street, Hoan Kiem district ( a few meters from Hoan Kiem Lake), Phở Thìn – 13 Lò Đúc, Hai Bà Trưng distrct, Phở Bát Đàn – 49 Bát Đàn ( quite near to Phở Lý Quốc Sư), Phở 24. 4. Bún Chả Of all great Vietnamese dishes, it would be a great loss if you could not try Bún Chả (grilled pork vermicelli soup). Bún Chả is served with a plate of rice noodle (bún), a steamy broth and herbs. Traditionally, Chả(pork) is a pork patty, but another type of chả which are small pieces of fatty pork belly is also accompanied. The most famous restaurant for Bún Chả is Bún Chả Hàng Mành at 1 Hàng Mành street but honestly, I do not really recommend it because there is too much chả and the price is quite expensive compared to others. I would suggest Bún chả 107B1 Thanh Cong instead(only available during lunch time) 6. Bánh cuốn Bánh cuốn originates in northern Vietnam. It is a rice noodle roll made from a thin, wide sheet of steamed fermented rice batter filled with ground pork, minced mushroom and minced shallot. This dish usually goes with Chả lụa (Vietnamese pork sausage), cucumber and dipping sauce. The most famous place for Bánh cuốn is Bánh cuốn Thanh trì. You can find Bánh cuốn Thanh Trì at Bánh cuốn Bà Hoành -66 Tô Hiến Thành, Bánh cuốn Gia An – 108-A6 Trần Huy Liệu/114A Yết Kiêu 8. Chả cá Lã Vọng Chả cá is one of the most special dish of Vietnam since it’s a name of a Hanoi’s Street. It is home to the famous “Chả Cá Lã Vọng”. Cha Ca is made from sizzling chunks of fish seasoned with garlic, ginger, turmeric and dill on a hot pan tableside. Chả Cá Lã Vọng – 14 Cha Ca street, Cha Ca Anh Vu – 116 K1 Giang Vo street Phở cuốn Phở cuốn (Rolled Phở) is a Hanoi’s traditional dish. It is made by wrapping fried beef(or pork and shrimp), onion, lettuce, basil and other vegetable in a thick wrap of the same rice noodles material used to make Phở. It is served with a dip sauce. In a phở cuốn restaurant, you can also find Phở Chiên Giòn (Fried Rolled Phở), which is really fatty and crispy. You can find “high-quality” phở cuốn at Phở Cuốn Ngũ Xá – 29 Ngu Xa, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi 26. Bánh đa cua Bánh đa cua is a Northern Vietnam dish which originates from Hai Phong province, Vietnam. It is made of field crab, Red Rice Noodles (Bánh đa đỏ), pork-boned broth, dried shrimp, tofu and a lot of vegetable. It is also served with such spice as shrimp sauce, chilli sauce, lemon and a variety of raw vegetable. To be honest, the last time I ate “Bánh Đa Cua” was 3 years ago so I don’t really remember the taste of this dish. However, my BFF come from Hai Phong and she promised me that she would take me to the best “Bánh đa cua” restaurant once I come back to Vietnam:). If you’re in Hanoi, try An Biên restaurant (168 Triệu Việt Vương street, Hai Bà Trưng district) 27. Bánh bột lọc Vietnamese transparent dumplings or “bánh bột lọc” is a specialty of the central region of Vietnam, specifically Hue and Da Nang. Bánh bột lọc is a fun snack and can be eaten throughout the day. The cover is made from tapioca starch and the inside is made of shrimp, slice pork belly. In some area in Quảng Nam ( a small province near Đà Nẵng), they also put sweet potato inside. Another indispensable factors to “Bánh Bột lọc” are mỡ hành which is mixed with the dumpling and the sauce served along the dish. Recommended address for Bánh bột lọc: You actually can enjoy bánh bột lọc anywhere in Hanoi ( in a kind of street-food-stall-next-to-a kindergarten). But for better quality Bánh bột lọc, come to Bánh xinh(Lane 72 Trần Hưng Đạo street – the same lane with “Chè Thập Cẩm” that I mentioned above), Nét Huế (204B Hàng Bông street, Hoàn Kiếm district) 36. Trứng Vịt Lộn, pronounced as “Trung-vit-lon” (Balut egg) “Trứng Vịt Lộn” ranked among the strangest food by travel and leisure magazine. Foreigners might get shocked when they first see these fertilized duck eggs with nearly developed embryo inside but to us Vietnamese (or at least for me), this is a part of childhood and a good choice for a quick breakfast. It is boiled and eaten with salt and some special spices/vegetables. A stall never sells “trứng vịt lộn” alone but along with porridge and other menu for breakfast. 14. Cốm or green rice is made from immature rice kernals roasted over very low heat then pounded in a mortar and pestle until flattened. Cốm is available in autumn (actually, nowadays, cốm is sold even in summer, however the best cốm can only be found from September to October). The best cốm of Vietnam is Cốm Vòng. Cốm is usually sold at street stalls or local markets 21. Salted/Sugared Dried Fruit (Ô mai) “Ô mai” has always been recognized as a famous Vietnamese snack. It is favored by a lot of Vietnamese people, especially women. It is a perfect combination of the sour taste of apricot, the saltiness of sour, the spicy of ginger and the natural sweetness of liquorice. “Ô mai is a favorite gift for Vietabroaders. “Ô mai” has a lot of flavors to serve your preference. My favorite dracontomelon. If you come to Hanoi, don’t forget to visit Hàng Đường street to try the unique taste of Ô mai: Hồng Lam(11 Hàng Đường). You can also try Tiến Thịnh (21 Hàng Đường street), Gia Lợi ( 16 Hàng Đường street) 23. Egg Coffee (Cafe Trứng) To a lot of people, egg coffee is still a very “strange” name. Egg Coffee is exclusive only to Hanoi and it has been existing ever since 1946. At the time being, a lot of coffee shops sell egg coffee but if you want to enjoy the very “original” one, you should definitely visit Cafe Giảng (39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân street, Hoàn Kiếm district, Hanoi) 25. Kem Tràng Tiền (Tràng Tiền Ice Cream) Kem Tràng Tiền is indeed Hanoi’s real ice cream. you must have heard about and tasted this before (If you haven’t, shame on you! Go and taste now!). It has a very long history of 54 years. There are 6 flavors for you to choose: milk coconut(Sữa dừa), Green Sticky rice (Cốm), Chocolate(Sô cô la), Green Beans (Đậu xanh), Vanilla (Va ni) and Cone (Ốc Quế)(this is the best-selling as well as my favorite flavor ever!). The most extraordinary thing about Kem Tràng Tiền is that you have to lead your motorcycle inside the warehouse to order ice cream and enjoy it while sitting on the motorcycle. The price of Kem Tràng tiền is very cheap so no need to worries: it only costs 12.000 VNd for 1 ice cream. There are now a lot of counterfeit Kem Tràng Tiền on Tràng Tiền street itself so remember to only buy delicious ice cream from 35 Tràng Tiền street or else you’ll regret.
