1.) This business where journalists give every new public scandal a name that has gate at the end is becoming silly, trite, and tedious. Its a journalistic cliché thats long past ready for retirement. 2.) Given the U.S. publics appalling ignorance of history, and the equally appalling general ignorance of most modern U.S. journalists, I wonder how many of the people who refer to the latest public scandal as [something]gate are even aware of the origins of that particular cliché, or capable of answering the question, What was Watergate? 3.) The best way to kill the cliché would probably be to push it to the point of maximum absurdity, by manufacturing a scandal involving gated communities or something, and calling it Gategate.
