10/18/2013 (Friday) Since Luke was a physician, it is appropriate that the Madonna speaks of the sick today: Pray for all the sick. Believe firmly. I will come to help, according to that which is in my power. I will ask my Son, Jesus, to help them. The most important thing, in the meantime, is a strong faith. Many who are sick think that it is sufficient to come here in order to be quickly healed. Some of them do not even believe in God, and even less in the apparitions, and then they ask for help from the Gospa! In answer to questions about the sick in 1981, the Gospa responded: Without faith, nothing is possible. All those who will believe firmly will be cured. And last, from the Acts of the Apostles: (Act 5:14-16) Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peters shadow might fall on some of them as he came by. A great number of people would also gather from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all cured. Reflection: On this feast of St. Luke, the physician, we cannot help but be aware of the central role that faith plays in healing, for it is mentioned throughout Scripture and Our Ladys messages as the one thing necessary. As we see in her message, Mary asks us to Pray for the sick. Believe firmly...the most important thing is a strong faith. Again, on July 24, 1981: Without faith, nothing is possible. All those who will believe firmly will be cured. When asked about a sick person on July 29, 1981, the Gospa responded, Praise be Jesus! She will be cured. She must believe firmly. Sacred Scripture bears out the great healing power of faith. From todays passage from St. James: (James 5:15) This prayer uttered in faith will reclaim the one who is ill, prayer uttered in faith will reclaim the one who is ill, and the Lord will restore him to health. Taken together, both Our Ladys messages and scripture emphasize that a firm, expectant faith is needed for healing at the Hands of God. And this faith, in turn, is deepened and strengthened through prayer, the foundational message of Medjugorje. On this his feast day, let us pray to St. Luke the physician to help us grow in faith and in prayer, that we may experience healing where it is most needed in our lives today, whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual. Application: In prayer, call to mind someone who is ill and offer the Prayer for the Sick for them (January 14), which was given by Our Lady in Medjugorje for just such a purpose. (We ask this in Jesus Name...Amen.)
