10:26 Jan 05 WA Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds & Heavy Rain. Kimberley, North Interior Forecast Districts. Details: Early Warning Network: ewn.au WA Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds & Heavy Rain for people in the Kimberley and North Interior forecast districts Issued at 10:19 am WST on Monday 5 January 2015. For people in parts of WA north of a line from Bidyadanga to Giles. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Broome, Derby, Kuri Bay, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Kununurra. Weather Situation A tropical low lies between Fitzroy Crossing and Derby and is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms throughout the Kimberley with activity expected to extend into eastern parts of the North Interior by Monday evening. It will be monitored closely for the potential to move over open water and develop into a tropical cyclone. Whilst there is only a moderate risk to develop into a tropical cyclone, it is expected to produce heavy rainfall and squally thunderstorms until at least Friday. Thunderstorms and showers may produce HEAVY RAINFALL that could cause FLASH FLOODING in the Kimberley forecast district extending into eastern parts of the North Interior by Monday evening. There is an enhanced risk of squally thunderstorms in far western parts of the Kimberley including Broome, which may produce DAMAGING WIND gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour that could cause DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. Margaret Gorge in the Fitzroy River catchment recorded 168.8 millimetres in 24 hours to 9am on Monday. Over the same period Flora Valley recorded 113.0 millimetres and Phillips Range recorded 100.2 millimetres. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. Slow down and turn your headlights on. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. If it is raining heavily and you can not see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
