10 OClock Teacher Question! Kare writes: I have a fifth grade student who is very bright. On state tests, he continues to receive above average ratings. He is in my highest guided reading group. However, this student is not anywhere close to meeting his full potential in the classroom. He is consistently turning in late/missing assignments with very poor work quality. His desk and locker are constantly messy even with a special accordion binder to organize each subject. The worst subject is math. During whole class discussion, he chooses not to follow along and I typically find him doodling instead of taking notes and reading instead of working on missing assignments in study hall. I have tried giving him enrichment assignments/activities but even that was poor quality. I work very closely with him in study hall to make sure his assignments are to his best potential and turned in. The counselor and I make sure his assignments are written down daily and all of the homework is sent home with him. We have recently moved his desk to the back of the room instead of the front of the room and added a band around the bottom of his chair to help with the fidgeting. His parents and I are very concerned about his success in middle school next year. Any suggestions you have to help this student would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
