10 Questions with Zachary Kuhlman Zachary Kuhlmans show, Masks and Mischief, with Ten Hundred and Wey opens this Friday at Love Gallery. To give you some insight into the man behind the art, here are 10 questions with Zachary Kuhlman. 1. Introduce yourself a little. Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do? My name is Zachary Kuhlman. I am the lead designer at Omerica Organic in Denver Colorado. I am originally from Colorado Springs. 2. Can you give a little insight or description of your art making process? How each piece comes to be? Usually a partial from an image or film will inspire me. A small element from something that will spark my imagination into a story that shapes an idea for me. The image source can be anything from photos to unique films, or some design element. 3. Take us through an average studio day. My studio is my home so I just sit an create. After Im happy with initial sketching then I project the image onto whatever I am going to paint on or Ill scan and start working in Illustrator to paint the image. 4. What are you listening to in the studio currently, and do you think that impacts the work you are making? I usually have music on shuffle. Cycles between: Childish Gambino, Little Dragon, Grimes, Chipzel, M83, Chvrches, and Jethro Tull. Music does not inspire or influence my work. Though I have thought the marriage of the two forms of art to be unique in telling a story. As if each piece of painted art had some sort of song to go with it. 5. I hate to ask “what inspires you?”, but we all take inspiration and influence from a variety of sources. What are some of the most important to you? Nature, but more in animals and bones. I gravitate to darker things like the occult and paranormal. And I mentioned before design elements those usually include interactions between humanity and nature (or various dichotomies), arrows, hearts, typography, etc. I have a lot of favorite artists that I try to keep up with. There work inspires me to push my own boundaries within my own style. 6. Favorite place traveled? Ive been all over the US. And so far I do not have a favorite place. I definitely think that is a great thing though cause I still have a lot of exploring to do and I am happy that I havent found a favorite yet. 7. Outside of making art, what are some of your favorite activities/hobbies? I am a graffiti and Osteology enthusiast as well as a Cinephile. So in other words I just like to support friends in Graffiti, such as Fuse from AWR and The 7th Letter. He is doing events pretty regularly and I try to support to community as well as the positivity graffiti can bring. I love oddities shops and rogue taxidermists so I try to show support in those communities as well. And when I have time I love to watch movies. All of them and there arent many I dont like. 8. What really grinds your gears? In my observations of people, one of the most common things I have noticed (especially among young people) is this sense of entitlement. That the world owes me something without earning anything or working hard for it. Forgetting what honest work is and earning what you have. All that matters anymore is the amount of Fu**s given (or lack there of) and the concept of YOLO. 9. Describe a dream project you’d love to actualize one day. My 1 and only dream is to collaborate with the artist that I look up to and admire. Not a huge production like a painting or mural. Just a simple exchange of drawings that include myself and the other artist. In no particular order that list includes: Greg Craola Simkins, Guillermo Del Toro, Alex Pardee, Kate McGill, JAW Cooper, Rebecca Green, Aryz... 10. Anything else you’d like to add/elaborate upon/mention/promote/complain about? Ive done enough name dropping so Ill just end with saying a fond thank you to all the family and friends who have supported me and encouraged me to never give up and keep moving forward! I wouldnt be here without all of you. That being said Id also, especially, like to thank all the haters and heart breakers. Maybe you dont know who you are and maybe you do know. But without you doubters and nay sayers I wouldnt have gotten as far as I have! Thanks Zach. Were excited about the new work, and well see you Friday! Come out to the opening of Masks and Mischief at Love gallery this Friday from 6-10pm to see what Zach, Wey, and Ten Hundred have been cooking up, as well as the grand opening of the new Colfax space. 4954 E.
