10 great things for families to do in Birmingham and the Midlands on August Bank Holiday weekend. In 2014, August Bank Holiday Monday will be on 25th August. Heres a guide to local activities available on the holiday weekend Saturday 23rd - Monday 25th August. 1. Simply Messing About With Boats at Sarehole Mill - 23rd August. Join members of the Bournville Boat Club who are demonstrating some of their models on the mill pond. The club will provide additional boats for visitors to have a go. There will also be a barrel organ playing in the yard. It is on from 12 noon to 4.00pm. Outdoor boating event and access to grounds are free - admission charges to mill apply. 2. Tudor Harvest Fair at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust - 23rd to 25th August. Experience the noise and bustle of a 16th century hiring market at this event in Stratford-upon-Avon. Meet the woodsman, shepherd, midwife, maid and others at the job centre as they look for harvest work at a traditional Tudor hiring fair. Talk to the workers and decide who youd hire and browse a range of Tudor stalls at the market. Normal admission applies. 3. Saturday Arts Club at Birmingham Museum - 23rd August. The theme for August at Saturday Arts Club, for 5-11 year olds, is technology. The arts club starts at 10.30am and finishes at 12.30pm, tickets for children are £5 per head, available on the day. It takes place in the Art Classroom, in the Learning Zone off Great Charles Street. 4. Summer in Southside - 23rd and 24th August. Watch free outdoor theatre, dance, circus and music in the Southside area of Birmingham, with locations including the Arcadian, Back to Backs, Hippodrome Square and Inge Street. 5. Pond Dipping at Sarehole Mill - 24th August. Fish for some creepy crawlies in the mill pond and examine your catch under the microscope. Sessions are led by the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust. £1 per child. Pond dipping equipment (net, tray, magnifying glass and identification sheet) will be provided. Bring welliies. At the end of the session, the catch can be taking to the schoolroom where microscopes are available. Limited number of children per half hour session - booking advisable. Meet a wheeler-dealer Fox, an eccentric old Owl and a maraca-shaking, party-mad Snake. Mouse can scare these hungry animals away with tall stories of the terrifying Gruffalo, but what happens when he comes face to face with the very creature he imagined? This is whats termed a relaxed performance - its open to everyone but specifically for people with an autistic spectrum condition, a learning disability or sensory and communication disorder. Its a great way for individuals, families, groups and schools to experience live performances together in an adapted environment. Small changes are made to the lighting and sound levels, while the attitude to noise and movement in the audience is more relaxed. 7. Clash of the Knights finale at Kenilworth Castle - 25th August. Sir William Marshall, the greatest knight in England, has assembled knights from throughout the land to do battle for prizes and glory at Kenilworth Castle. With bow, lance and shield, the knights and their teams will compete on foot and horseback in the exciting conclusion to English Heritage’s season of clashing knights. Pick your favourite knight and cheer him on. 8. Community Fun Day at Soho House - 25th August. Soho House and Ladywood Arts Forum team up for a free Community Fun Day for all the family from 3pm to 6pm. Activities include a bouncy castle, face painting, arts activities, food and live music - all for free. 9. Scooby Doo: The Mystery of the Pyramid at New Alexandra Theatre - 25th to 27th August. On at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne arrive in Egypt where they must solve the mystery of Pharaoh Hatchepsout’s Pyramid. Not so easy if the gang has to deal with mysterious mummies plus the wrath of the Pharaoh who will transform anyone who dares to approach the pyramid... into stone! With hilarious physical comedy, popular tunes and special effects, this 90-minute show is for the whole family. Book early for best seats, and be advised that this is a loud, vibrant, action-packed childrens show with spooky fun and content that may not be suitable for youngsters with a nervous disposition or certain linked medical conditions. Parental discretion is advised. 10. Horrible Histories at Warwick Castle - until 31st August. The foulest and funniest moments from history are brought to life through five different areas of the castle, each with live actors telling stories and offering the chance to take part in interactive games. This year you can encounter: Smashing Saxons vs. Vicious Vikings, plus Gorgeous Georgians, Slimy Stuarts, Vile Victorians and The Measly Middle Ages. Horrible Histories is on at the castle every day until 31st August.
