10 years ago….the college going twenty-year old me definitely had some body image issues, didn’t care about nutrition and longed to be “thin”. I don’t really think healthy was on my list of priorities. Loved me some 100 calories packs of empty nutrition and am ashamed to admit how many “diets” I did…one of which included two meals a day of cereal!! My poor body :( I have had the benefit as I age of gaining knowledge about nutrition, body type, etc. that have made me stop wishing my body looked a certain way and focus on getting stronger, leaner and healthier. I know very well that unless I went into starvation mode, a “thigh gap” is just not in my DNA and I’m okay with that! BUT teenagers and young girls don’t have the maturity to think of it from this angle and raising a little girl is just scary (well not yet, but in the future?). This video is funny and will hopefully give you a chuckle. What will NOT make you laugh is if you search “thigh gap” on YouTube as I did to find this video again that I had seen in my newsfeed the other day. There were tons of videos of twenty-something girls giving advice on how to attain a thigh gap. Sigh. Depressing. To end on a happy note – I did read in my ACE Fitness Journal the other day that a survey of young girls said “fitspiration” type pages were more important to them than following mainstream celebrities. I’m hopeful that these pages they follow promote healthy living and not just attaining an ideal body. A mom can hope, right??? I’d love to hear your comments on how you plan (or already do) talk to your little girls about a healthy body image. Or do you plan to just lead by example and hope a talk is never necessary? https://youtube/watch?v=aPvAPK71eIE
