10 years ago today, my mother celebrated her last birthday on this Earth. As some of you may know, she was murdered by her abuser. This day will never be easy for me, especially now that I have children that will never meet their Grand-mère. Georgia asked me who would blow out Grand-mères candles and my heart broke. The only thing I can do now is advocate for victims of domestic violence and raise awareness. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. No one seems to care about it. We just push that issue under the rug. No one wants to discuss it. Well, friends, I want to discuss it. I want this issue to be in your face. I want you to know that domestic violence is a major problem all over the world. We can help. Please, donate to your local domestic crisis center. They dont receive enough funding and oftentimes have to turn people away, forcing them back into the violent situation from which they are trying to flee. If you are local to me, come to our store, Peace & Carrots and bring donations for The Merryman Domestic Crisis Center. They dont only need monetary donations. Sometimes people come into the shelter with nothing other than the clothes on their backs. You CAN make a difference. Please do. And remember my mothers name: Myrna Beth Gill Sturm. She will never be forgotten.
