100 years ago at near this very hour the power of the good news of Jesus Christ was manifest so profoundly that war these so called Great War in Europe came to a halt that defied the powers that be. It was the first Christmas of that terrible conflict. Already i no mans land between the two sides. And it is the story of Christs birth did inspire peace breaking out among the troops. It would so frighten political and military leadership on both sides that they would censor mail to keep the word from getting out and a year later would issue the direst of threats if a truce was even considered in 1915. That is the power of the gospel narrative of Jesus birth. And there are people that seek to deny his very existence but it is transforming message with the power to break our swords and turn them to plows. You may argue about Jesus existence or about the claims made about him for about the people who claim to follow him, but Jesus and his birth are a focal point of history. And may have the power to lay the princes and the generals and the CEOs of this world low. That is why as worthless and is failing as I am I strive to follow him. In that moment in 1914 Jesus was dramatically shown to be the Prince of Peace. May those who take his name strive to live his life and so bring peace to this world so torn apart right now.
