100 years ago today, my maternal grandmother, Catherine McIsaac, - TopicsExpress

100 years ago today, my maternal grandmother, Catherine McIsaac, was born on Prince Edwards Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. We fondly called her Nana, or Nanny! In the late 1960s, Nanny lived three houses down from our home, and we would always visit with her. My sisters, Donna and Linda, and I have been reminscing on the things we remembered most about her. The biggest thing I remember is how she toasted bread! It was simple. Two slices of toast and butter...real butter. It was to die for! Noone, I mean noone, could toast bread like Nanny! Every once in a while one of my siblings would walk to her house in the morning and Nanny would make breakfast. My favorite was scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and her world-famous toast! My Uncle Jimmy would get aggravated with me because I had to have Ketchup on my eggs. Nanny would tell Uncle Jimmy to leave me alone because that was the way I liked my eggs. When Nanny got sick (lung cancer - she had smoked from early teens until she was in her late 60s) I flew home on a C-130 military aircraft from Little Rock AFB AR to Charleston AFB SC in November 1987. I met my brother David there and we took a bus up to Brick New Jersey. Nanny was in the hospital and the doctors gave her no hope to survive her stay. I was told she was wanted Bobby because I was her minister. David and I arrived and I was able to lead her to the Lord that evening. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Additionally, the cancer had spread to her spinal cord and the doctors said she would not be able to move...but Nanny was stubborn and so was I...we both believed that she would not die in the hospital...I assured Nanny that she wouldnt. We took baby steps...before the first night was over she was sitting up. By mid-afternoon the next day, she was sitting in the recliner next to the bed, by the third day she was walking down the hospital hallways. And in less than a week, Nanny was walking out the same ER door she came in the in Code Blue status. The security guard and hospital staff were amazed! Totally dumbfounded...they said, what happened and I boldly answered, Jesus happened -- it was a miracle. I spent two weeks staying in Nannys apartment (it was like a Social Security/Welfare type residency). She always kept her apartment immaculate. I did everything for her...bathed, fed, looked after her. It was a humbling experience, but one that I will always remember...Nanny trusted me...totally trusted me. Unfortunately, I had to go back to Little Rock AFB. Then, in April 1988, I received the dreaded phone call that Nanny died. My mom, who died in November 2004, said that she was rubbing Nannys forehead as she lay on her death bed when, all of a sudden, Nanny opened her eyes widely and started to gaze around the room. I believe she saw the angels who were going to escort her to her Heavenly Mansion. Then she was gone. Its been 15 years since Nanny departed her earthly body and received her eternal reward. I look forward to the day when we will see each other again...bowing at the feet of Jesus Christ -- our Lord and Savior. Until then, I love you Nanny. Bob
