#100WordsOrLess The coffee was slammed down on the desk with such force that some of the froth landed on his trousers. The one good thing about his uniform being khaki. He turned around with annoyance, but his wife had already headed out of the room. It was their first fight. And it had started on all too familiar territory – their vacation plans were cancelled again. But that was part of the package of marrying a policeman. He jumped back to the case which had spoilt his long planned holiday. The final touches were being given on the case report. “The victim (Susheela, 28 years, married to P. Rajan) had climbed on the stool to reach a set of plates (evidence item 7) kept in the loft and had slipped. The fall caused her to impact with the edge of the kitchen counter with force and the sharp edge (photo 3B) caused a deep fracture of her skull (refer autopsy form 2A). The impact caused instant hemorrhaging and attempts at resuscitation by witness (Lakshmi S, 26 years, unmarried, was visiting victim) were not successful. The husband (P Rajan) was in the adjacent room and rushed in on hearing the fall, but was unable to help. The authorities were notified at 2:29pm, 18 minutes after the estimated time of death. The late Mrs. Susheela Rajan has been the victim of an unfortunate home accident that illustrates the fleeting nature of life and has left her husband devastated.” Police reports did not call for eloquence or opinions, but he didn’t care. No one would be reading the report except for the insurance company which was going to shell out the money. He was in the process of tying up the case file with the witness and husbands statements when he heard his wife scream from the kitchen. He dropped everything and ran. The eight seconds to his kitchen seemed like forever. His wife didn’t quite understand why he hugged her so tight. She had screamed when she dropped the ketchup bottle down and her saree was spoilt with red blotches. But that somehow seemed to make her usually stoic husband nearly cry. He apologized for the fight and for the first time since their marriage, said he loved her like he meant it. He promised to take her on the vacation. She wasn’t complaining. -- After six long months of wrangling, he had finally managed to secure enough leave from the Commissioners Office. The couple had just entered the railway station and he saw a heavily pregnant lady struggling to lift a suitcase. He rushed to her aid and that seemed to make her nervous. Her face was vaguely familiar but he couldn’t place it. He headed back to his wife and stepped onto the train when turned back in time to see the newly married Mr. P. Rajan and Mrs. Lakshmi Rajan hurriedly walk away. He jumped back to the case which had spoilt his long planned holiday.
