LG attends National Conference of Tourism Ministers Underscores vision to develop A&NI as sustainable & eco-friendly tourism destination Port Blair, Aug 21 The Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lt. General A.K. Singh PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd.) attended the National Conference of Tourism Ministers at ITC Maurya, New Delhi. The Union Minister of Finance, Defence and Corporate Affairs Shri. Arun Jaitley made the inaugural address and Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for Tourism & Culture (Independent Charge) also spoke on the occasion. The Lt. Governor underscored the vision to develop Andaman & Nicobar Islands as a unique destination for sustainable, eco-friendly tourism keeping in mind ecological concerns & local sensibilities. The Lt Governor said, for augmentation of tourist inflow International Air-connectivity from Port Blair should be the top priority. Rationalization of airfares to Port Blair, setting up of Oceanarium, providing capital investment subsidy for tourism infrastructure projects such as resorts/hotels, catamarans/speed boats for inter- island transportation, providing tax holidays for investments in tourism infrastructure projects in Andamans on the lines of tax exemptions offered to Northeast and Jammu Kashmir were also raised during the Conference. The Lt. Governor also requested Ministry of Tourism to open a local Chapter of National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) in the Islands to facilitate promotion of water sports activities. The Lt. Governor also requested the Ministry of Tourism to launch ‘Incredible India’ campaign for promotion of Andaman. Production of publicity material on Andamans for distribution in the overseas markets, familiarization visits of tour operators, travel agents, travel writers from overseas markets to the Andamans under the hospitality scheme of the Ministry of Tourism, organizing of next Edition of the International Tourism Mart-2015 in the Andamans were also demanded in the conference. The Lt. Governor requested the support of Ministry of Tourism for facilities like Tourist Visa on Arrival (TVOA) as well as e-Visa facilities in Andamans for promotion of Yacht Tourism, Cruise Tourism and Air charters. Counseling for vacant seats in MGGC on Aug 28 Mayabunder, Aug 21 Few seats have fallen vacant under ST reserved quota while few seats have been left by students in Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabunder. Counseling for these seats will be held on Aug 28, 2014 at 10 am in the college auditorium. The criteria for filling of the seats, for tribal candidates who have applied and whose names are displayed in the college notice board under reserved quota, will be strictly on the basis of merit. The unreserved seats also will be filled up on the basis of merit on first come first basis. No consideration will be made for the candidates who have not applied. The merit criteria will be considered on the basis of final merit list displayed on 18th July, 2014. Admission will be given on the same day along with fee collection and admission to eligible candidates for hostels. The selected candidates should also be prepared to resume their classes w.e.f. Farmers being encouraged to grow improved varieties of spices Port Blair, Aug 21 The Agro climatic conditions of A&N islands are quite congenial for cultivation of spices such as pepper, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and turmeric. To harness this potential, the High Value Agriculture Development Agency (HVADA) under the National Horticulture Mission encourages the farmers to bring a large area under improved varieties of spices. It provides 50% assistance limited to Rs 25,000/- per ha for perennial spices such as Black pepper Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Clove and 50% assistance limited to Rs.15,000/- per ha for Rhizomatic spices like ginger and turmeric. This assistance is provided towards the cost of planting materials and inputs used for Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in spices garden. Farmers growing spices in 0.10 ha to 4.0 ha of land are eligible for assistance under this scheme. Interested farmers may contact either the Assistant Director (Agri) of their respective Zones or the Nodal Officer (HVADA), Haddo, Port Blair on all working days. Children’s theatre workshop underway at Andaman Club Staff Reporter, Port Blair, Aug 21 A Children’s Theatre Workshop, organised by the Department of Art & Culture is underway at the Andaman Club. NSS unit of JNRM organized tree plantation week Port Blair, Aug 21 National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of JNRM organised tree plantation week from Aug 15 to 21. On Aug 15, the Principal of JNRM started the programme with the plantation of plant sapling in the college premises. During the week long programme about 300 saplings of fruit bearing, ornamental and flower plants saplings were planted in the college campus. Yesterday, the volunteers of National Integration Camp, being organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Port Blair, also participated and planted about 200 saplings. The week long programme concluded with plantation of saplings by the faculty members and NSS volunteers. Implementation of MGNREGA reviewed Mayabunder, Aug 21 A meeting was convened by the District Programme Coordinator, MGNREGA (Deputy Commissioner), North & Middle Andaman here today, to review Panchayat wise implementation of MGNREGA in the District for the Financial Year 2013-14 and 2014-15. Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner appreciated the efforts of all the implementing agencies, implementing officers and staff of MGNREGA for successful implementation of the scheme in the district and sought their continued contribution towards the same for fulfillment of objectives of MGNREG Act. During the interactive session various suggestions for better implementation of the Act was discussed by all present.
