111 years ago today the Wright Brothers and their mechanic Charlie Taylor made history with their first powered flight at Kill Devil Hills/Kitty Hawk after 7 years of experimentation. This flight lasted 12 seconds, and only covered 120 feet but proved that powered, manned, heavier-than-air flight was possible and started man on a path of development and exploration that boggles the mind. In 1947, only 44 years after that first flight, man broke the sound barrier, and 22 years after that, man landed on the Moon. Today Voyager I, a space probe launched in 1977 is a staggering 12.2 billion miles from Earth, travelling at 38,000 mph. To think that the industry I have now spent half my life in started in a bicycle shop a little under 120 years ago is just amazing. Heres to you Orville, Wilbur and Charlie, thanks for your work!
