11th August, 2014 To: All Priests Dear Fr. EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD): INTERIM PASTORAL GUIDE In view of the recent outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease we would like to introduce, in the interim, until stated otherwise in the future, the following pastoral regulations for the Catholic Diocese of Gboko, while we await the general pastoral guide from the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria. As we follow these regulations we encourage pastoral initiative, enlightenment, and great caution in passing on this information. We recommend that the following precautious steps should be taken without delay: 1. The kiss of Peace: The congregation for Divine Worship and discipline of Sacraments acknowledges that: “this rite is optional”. We recommend that the kiss of peace should be omitted at Masses. 2. Distribution of Holy Communion: We recommend that henceforth, Holy Communion be given in the hand of the recipients. 3. Holy Water Bowls: As we recommend the use of Holy Water in homes and places of work, the Holy Water fonts at the entrance of the Church should be discontinued. 4. Sick call: We advise that priests should exercise extreme caution as they administer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Closely related to this, we recommend regular hand washing after their pastoral duties. Wash hand bowls and disinfectants be provided necessarily in the Sacristy for the Priests and other Altar Ministers. 5.
