125 YEARS AGO... At about 8:30 am, John Parke the young engineer and Col. Elias J. Unger, president of the South Fork Fishing & Hunting Club had a conference atop the South Fork Dam discussing what could be done to save it from failing. At this time, Unger already had a group of Parkes Italian immigrant workers were working to try to save the dam. While on the dam, Club member D.W.C. Bidwell stopped to talk to Col. Unger before he made his way to South Fork to catch a train back to Pittsburgh. Col. Unger told him that the situation was serious and, ...that if the dam survived the day, he would see that major changes were made to insure that this sort of thing never happened again. ~NMK
