13 days till Christmas!! Christmas is fast approaching and although todays update is a bit later than usual we have reached the halfway point with our advent calendars woo hoo!!! In the last few days we have noticed how some customers have moved home insurance policy based on a premium without taking into full account of the cover differences, or the declaration made to insurers. Of course if a claim is made customers can be left devastated when claims are not paid out but of course it is no use being wise after the event. As a tip when looking at home insurance check the following:- What is the excess? Have you had any claims, if so have they been notified? Is the cover on a like for like basis? Does it include accidental damage cover? Check the quality of the insurance product using the Defaqto comparison guide ....defaqto/star-ratings/home-insurance A big thing we have noticed is whether you are in an area with a history of flooding or are you near a river or watercourse? Often insurers will make an assumption and this will be disclosed within the Statement of Fact. Check this document thoroughly and speak to the insurer if necessary. Working from the Isle of Sheppey in Kent (kentonline.co.uk/kent/news/flooding-on-sheppey-in-1953-a56444/) we still have to tell insurers of the areas previous history of flooding in the 50s and 70s and proximity to the sea, rivers or watercourses to be sure our clients are insured. Finally we have found if the product is a budget or a value insurance policy often there will be exclusions or things not insured as you would expect them to be on a premium product. Indeed like most products you buy, you really do get what you pay for. For true certainty on whether you have the right insurance cover for your prized possessions or property always use an insurance broker! :-)
