13 years ago today, our lives as a nation changed instantly. The enemy brought their evil to our doorsteps and changed the way we enjoyed our freedoms and way of life. I was attending a one day home buyers course at NAS Oceana that the Navy offered to first timers. During one of the breaks, I noticed a gathering of people around the break room with a look of disbelief on their faces. Most sat stone faced. As soon as I walked up to look at the screen, the second passenger jet slammed into the second tower of the World Trade Center. Thats when it got crazy on base. Sirens, alarms, panic and confusion. I lost a shipmate at the Pentagon on that day. OS2 Nehamon Lyons was tragically killed along with 124 other brave souls working at the Pentagon. He and I both served aboard the USS Gettysburg from 97-01. Unfortunately for me, he wouldnt be the only person Id know and worked with who would sacrifice their life so that we could live. RIP to Steven Daugherty, Mark Carter, Tommy Valentine, Lance Vaccaro, Joshua Harris, Adam Brown, Michael Koch, Nate Hardy, Louis Souffront, and the 31 Heroes of Extortion 17.
