**1314 - 2014** Will Scotland win its freedom back 700 years after Bannockburn? • Battle of Bannockburn - 1314: Robert the Bruce won Scotland back its freedom from English Tyranny. • English attempted act of union - 1605: Failed. • English attempted act of union - 1667: Failed. • English attempted act of union - 1689: Failed. • English parliament act of union - 1706: Passed. • Scottish parliament act of union - 1707: Passed.* *But this didnt represent the views of the Scottish people and many Scottish parliamentarians were bribed!!! Robert Burns wrote on the matter: “Were bought and sold for English Gold, Such a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation.” • Following the death of Queen Anne in 1714, her half brother, Prince James Francis Edward Stewart, was denied his rightful succession to the throne of Scotland and its inherited throne of England by the Elector of Hanover and direct descendant of the House of Guelf, George I, who then seized the British thrones; he was succeeded by his son, George II in 1727. • Scottish Jacobite rising - 1715-16: with initial successes, betrayals eventually resulted in failure and Prince James Francis Edward Stewart was forced into exile. • Scottish Jacobite rising - 1745-46: Prince James son, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) attempted to regain the British thrones for the exiled House of Stuart. Again with initial successes, betrayals by would-be supporters and strategic mistakes, the Jacobite army was finally defeated at Culloden Moor. The young prince escaped into exile, whilst Roderick Mackenzie, who was a very close likeness to the prince, acted as a decoy for the pursuing English, who caught him and beheaded him near Glenmoriston; murdered! His memorial is still there today. His murder shows that the English would have murdered the young prince if they could have caught him. Scottish Independence Referendum - 2014: After 700 years, will Scotland win another Bannockburn? “Scots, wha hae wi Wallace bled, Scots, wham Bruce has aften led, Welcome tae yer gory bed, Or tae victorie.” “Now’s the day, an now’s the hour: See the front o battle lour, See approach proud Edward’s power - Chains and Slaverie.” “Wha will be a traitor knave? Wha will fill a coward’s grave? Wha sae base as be a slave? Let him turn an flee.” “Wha, for Scotland’s king and law, Freedom’s sword will strongly draw, Freeman stand, or Freeman fa, Let him on wi me.” “By Oppression’s woes and pains, By your sons in servile chains! We will drain our dearest veins, But they shall be free.” “Lay the proud usurpers low, Tyrants fall in every foe, Liberty’s in every blow! - Let us do or dee.”
