14 August 1989 I turned up for my first training at Waipawa Fire Station. Was given a black bunker coat, gumboots with handles on them a pair of leggings and a yellow helmet, all hand me downs. What a 25years its been. Starting in Waipawa then Richmond, Kumeu/huapai and Greymouth before moving to Manawatu to work for the Fire Service as a Volunteer support officer joined USAR at this time, then Manager Operational Quality and Resource for the Western fire Region left working for the Fire Service but stayed on as a volunteer at Halcombe. Back to Waipawa and now Region training co-ordinator. Have had the best and worst experiences of my life notably Feb 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. Running competitions and competing at Nationals with Waipawa and Greymouth cleaning up Nelson Sub with Richmond and winning the provincial with Greymouth. A real highlight competing as a two man team with my son Hayden Dyer only last year. Have met and worked with some pretty cool people from all parts of the organisation. Royce Tatham Alan McEnaney Tiger McCleary , Garry Baker, Joy-Tony Dench just to name a few and all the other members of the best little fire service in the world as Swanny ( Allan Swanson ) used to say on his intro to recruits. Thanks to all those who have helped and supported me over the last. 25years. Its been just Awesome.
