14 years ago tonight, I went on a ride-along with my 3rd favorite Officer of the law, Keith Hadley (only behind Walker Texas Ranger and RoboCop). It was early in his night shift and we were out and about when dispatch called and said a prisoner had escaped from the back of a Sheriffs Deputy car still in cuffs. We raced back to the Police Department and started meticulously scanning the area from inside the patrol car. The shift Sergeant told everyone to get on foot and look in the backyards in the neighborhood but I didnt have a radio or flashlight on me so Keith dropped me off to pick one up. As I was leaving the Department, Gary Brizzee called over the radio and said the guy was hopping over fences headed towards J street. I saw him come out onto J street and I yelled POLICE! STOP WHERE YOU ARE! Of course, he didnt, and started running west. I radioed to the other Cops and told them where we were as he turned north on 4th street. As I was about 10 feet behind him, I yelled STOP OR ILL SEND THE DOG! He immediately stopped where he was and turned to face me. One of the patrol cars came FLYING up next to us and I pushed him up against the car until two Officers came up and took control of the scene. That was the highlight of my young 19 years on this planet and cemented my respect for the hard working men and women in law enforcement. DAMN I miss that stuff!
