14th September Current Affairs: Special Days 1. National Hindi Divas Day • National Hindi Divas (Hindi Day) was observed across India on 14 September 2014. • The day was observed to promote the Matra Bhasha – the mother tongue of India and show its importance as a language in the country. • It was envisioned that Hindi would become the sole working language of the Central government by 1965 (per directives in Article 344 (2) and Article 351). Appointments 1. Meghalaya Governor Dr Krishan Kant Paul was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Manipur additional charge at Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan. • Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur Lakshmi Kanta Mahapatra administered the oath of office and secrecy to Dr KK Paul. • Dr KK Paul who is presently the Governor of Meghalaya will be taking additional charge as Governor of Manipur. • The newly appointed Governor also inspected a guard of honour provided by a contingent of the Manipur Rifles. Awards 1. Turing biopic wins Toronto film festival audience prize • A biographical picture of British code breaker and war hero Alan Turing, featuring an Oscar-bait performance by Benedict Cumber batch, won the Toronto film festival audience prize for best picture on September 14. • Turing was a brilliant Cambridge mathematician and pioneer of computer sciences who broke Nazi codes for the British military during the Second World War, helping to shorten the war. • Cumberbatch has been generating Oscar buzz for his portrayal of the computer sciences pioneer in Norwegian director Morten Tyldums The Imitation Game, about Turings work at code and cypher centre Bletchley Park. Banking 1. HDFC bank has planned to issue the debit card PIN to the customers through SMS. • With the aim of being eco friendly the bank wanted to save paper and instead of sending PIN of the debit cards through post it will be send through the SMS. • The new PIN issued over SMS is named as ‘Green PIN’. The green PIN will be issued to the customer at a time and location most convenient to them. About Green PIN: • Basically green PIN is a one time generated password that will be sent to the customer registered mobile number. 2. TATA group is preparing to establish 15,000 new ATMs in the country in coming few years. • 67% of the ATMs will be set up in rural areas. • The TATA group has already established 2,000 WLA’s across the 18 states in the country and has received an overwhelming response from the customers. About white labelled ATM’s: • White-label ATMs are similar to other ATMs in that they can be used by any domestic debit, credit or prepaid cardholder to withdraw cash, make a balance inquiry, change the personal identification number or ask for mini statements. • These entities have a mandate to deploy 67% of ATMs in rural locations (tier III-VI) and 33% in urban locations (tier I and II cities). • White-label ATM operators need a sponsor bank to operate the machines. According to RBI rules, these sponsor banks will be liable to settle transactions and maintain cash at these ATMs. Maintenance and servicing will be the white-label ATM operator’s job. • Charges for customers remain the same as those levied by a card-issuing bank. So, the first five transactions in a month are free at these ATMs too. The card issuing bank will pay the interchange fee for the “free” transactions, but will charge you for anything beyond that limit. Ltd Chennai Muthoot Finance Limited, Kochi • In June 2012, the RBI had issued policy guidelines permitting NBFC’s entities to set up and operate WLAs. Prior to this, only banks were permitted to set up and operate ATMs in the country. Books – Writers 1. Naseeruddin Shah on his autobiography “And Then One Day” • Naseeruddin Shahs memoir And Then One Day is a candid recount of almost four decades of his life and the actor is happy that it is being appreciated though he says it may ruffle a few feathers in the film industry. • One of the most formidable actors in Hindi cinema, Shah started writing about his life in 2002 but was not sure about its quality so he kept postponing it. Deaths 1. Educationist Kireet Joshi died • Educationist Kireet Joshi died on 14 September 2014. He was 83. He was a former education adviser to the Union government in 1976. • Joshi played an important role in developing and spreading the message of Integral education both in India and abroad. Economy 1. Declining prices of vegetable and other food articles pulled down wholesale inflation sharply to 3.74 per cent in August to a nearly five-year low. • The inflation measured on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) was at 5.19 per cent in July and 6.99 per cent in August 2013. 2. Saradha Group guilty of running ponzi scheme, to face prosecution: SFIO • Regarding chit fund scam of 14 Saradha group firms, SFIO said these companies have been found to be running ponzi schemes and would face prosecution for violation of several laws. • SFIO: Serious Fraud Investigation Office International 1. Sri Lankan Navy personnel allegedly attacked Indian fishing boats and damaged more than 100 nets near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) fishermen association representatives said in Rameswaram. • Fishermen, who ventured into the sea in 618 boats, had to return empty-handed the Sri Lankan Navy had deployed its vessels, including two ships with cannon and machine guns, much inside Indian waters and refused to allow them even near the IMBL, Fishermen’s Association president T. Sesuraja and Secretary S. Emiret alleged. National 1. The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented Rajbhasa awards in various categories on the occasion of Hindi Divas at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. • These awards were instituted by the Rajbhasha Vibhag, Ministry of Home Affairs to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments and Nationalized Banks etc. in the field of Hindi. • Speaking on the occasion, the President said the Constitution provides that Hindi language should be developed in such a way that it should reflect India’s composite culture. 2. Double-decker train to New Delhi might be shifted from Lucknow to Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav wrote to Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, urging him not to shelve the original plan of running the train from the state capital. • According to official sources, the Chief Minister intervened after reports that the North-Eastern Railway (NER) had asked the Railway Board to give the train to Northern Railway (NR) for operation citing prevailing pressure on the Lucknow-Delhi route. Currently, the NER runs trains via Kanpur, Aligarh and Bareilly. Persons in News 1. Scientist Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, former director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, has been named the chair of an expert panel to recommend best technologies for Prime Minister Narendra Modis Swachh Bharat national sanitation campaign. • The 19-member expert committee has been asked to examine best technologies on sanitation and water so that they can be scaled up on a sustainable basis in various states -- with affordability, sustainability, scalability. Science & Technology 1. NASA unveils worlds largest spacecraft welding tool • NASA has unveiled the largest spacecraft welding tool - the Vertical Assembly Center (VAC) - at its Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. • The US space agency said the 170-feet-tall, 78-feet-wide giant VAC completes a world class welding tool kit that will be used to build the core stage of Americas next great rocket - the Space Launch System (SLS). Sports 1. HS Prannoy wins Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold title • Indian badminton youngster H.S. Prannoy defeated Indonesian Firman Abdul Kholik to clinch his first GP Gold. • H.S. Prannoy clinched the mens singles title of the $125,000 Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold. • Prannoy is the third Indian to clinch a GP Gold title this year after Saina Nehwal won the India GP Gold in January and Arvind Bhat came out on top at the German Open GP Gold in March. 2. Congressional wins Panchshil Juvenile Million • Congressional ridden by A.Sandesh won the Panchshil Juvenile Million. • The winner is owned by Mr. Dilip Thomas rep. Rajagiri Rubber & Produce Co. Top Seed Sabine Lisicki Fights Back to Win Hong Kong Open • Sabine Lisicki defeated Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic to win the inaugural WTA Hong Kong Open. • Sabine Lisicki justified her top seeding by winning the inaugural WTA Hong Kong Open against Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. 4. USA Basketball wins 2014 FIBA World Cup • Kyrie Irving scored 26 points, and Team USA beat Serbia in a rout to claim the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup. The team became the first to repeat world champions since 2002. • The USA claimed their fifth world crown, pulling them even with Yugoslavia for the most in history. Yugoslavia is also the last team to repeat as world champions in 1998 and 2002. Brazil also accomplished the feat in 1959 and 1963. • The bronze tittle was won by France after defeating Lithuania with 95-93.
