14th anniversary of Timor-Leste the ‘Popular Consultation’ Dear Friends On the 14th anniversary of the ‘Popular Consultation’ which gave to the people of Timor-Leste their independence from Indonesia, I offer my warm congratulations on the successes of our independent state. The period before the Popular Consultation was a deeply testing time for the people of Timor-Leste, and resulted in having to build the country anew. But the day itself, 30 August 1999, was an opportunity that was grasped tightly and displayed proudly. On that day, the people of Timor-Leste knew they owned their future. Each year, at this time, we remember the sacrifices of so many and the loss of so much. But, with Timor-Leste’s independence, we also celebrate its achievements, and look to its future. On this memorable day, I wish the people and friends of Timor-Leste all the very best, for now and into the future.
