$15,000 In Scholarships Given To Milam County College Students To Honor Christine Holcombe The Christine Holcombe Memorial scholarship fund has awarded seven Milam County college students a total of $15,000 in scholarships. The collegiate scholarship fund has been established in honor of longtime Milam County extension agent Christine Holcombe who lost her battle with cancer in January of this year. Funds for this scholarship were raised at the Mardi Gras Gala in February. “We had several deserving students who applied for the scholarships” said Marie Bakken of the scholarship committee. “Christine was always encouraging young people to focus on their education and follow their dreams and I was honored to be on the committee to select recipients for the inaugural year of the scholarship.” Sarah Ferrera of Gause, Logan Kostroun of Cameron and Isaiah Logan of Burlington were each awarded a $3000 scholarship. Ferrera is studying to be a pediatric nurse at the University of Texas medical branch. Kostroun currently attends Texas A&M and plans to become a medical physician. Logan is studying to become a medical doctor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Kurt Terry and Kaitlyn Zaroksy both of Cameron were each awarded a $2000 scholarship. Terry is attending Baylor University and is majoring in history. Zarosky is attending Texas A&M pursuing a degree in kinesiology and wants to become a coach and teacher in the public school system. Cheyenne Lee and Kayla Laurence both of Cameron were awarded $1000 each in collegiate scholarships. Lee hopes to become an author and illustrator and attends Hollins University in Virginia. Laurence is studying to become a dental hygienist at Blinn College. The collegiate scholarships will be awarded annually with funds coming from the Mardi Gras Gala. Next year’s event will be held in February 2014. The scholarship is open to students who have completed at least one year of college work and graduated from a Milam County high school or must be a former Milam County resident.
