15/09/2013 September 15 Lord’s Day John bears witness of Him, and he has cried saying, This was He of whom I said, He that comes after me is preferred before me for He was before me … He it is of whom I said, A Man comes after me, who takes a place before me, because He was before me. (John 1:15,30) John the Baptist is one of the great figures of the New Testament, indeed one of the greatest men in the entire Bible. The Lord Jesus could say of him that “among them that are born of women” there was no greater prophet than John (Lk. 7:28). But John’s only desire was to emphasize the personal dignity of the Lord Jesus, and that his own ministry should wane in light of that dignity. He would say that he was not worthy even to untie the sandals of the One he was presenting to Israel and that “He must increase, but I must decrease” (Jn. 3:30). This comes strikingly before us in John’s statement that the One coming after him would necessarily be “preferred” before him due to the fact that He was “before” him. But what do these words of John actually mean? A literal translation will help us in understanding this: “After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me” (Jn. 1:30 NASB). We know that John was born about six months before the Lord Jesus (Lk. 1:36) and hence the statement that “a Man comes after me.” But when this Man was born into the world and subsequently entered His public ministry He of necessity had “a higher rank” than John. The reason for this is obvious, “for He existed before me.” He is God and as a divine Person entering into this world, He takes the first place in rank. This helps us to understand the doctrine that He is the “Firstborn of all creation” (Col. 1:15-17). He was the Creator and as such He existed “before all” things and hence He has the preeminence when coming into His own creation. John “leaped with joy” in his mother’s womb in the presence of that Greatness (Lk. 1:43-44). B. Reynolds
