15 November 1976: George Lutton, 41-year-old Protestant, married and a member of the UDR was at a barrier in Church Place, Lurgan when he was shot by the IRA. He was part of a 4-man patrol that was ambushed near the Shankill Parish Church. About 10 shots were fired by a gunman that was using an Armalite rifle. A 2nd soldier was also injured in the attack. The attack occurred around 10:00PM in heavy rain. George Lutton joined the UDR in 1971 and was from Brookhill, Lurgan. The IRA claimed responsibility for the attack and said: recent court cases have at last exposed the UDR as part and parcel of the loyalist murder gangs which have accounted for numerous sectarian killings. In the weeks ahead attacks on the UDR, both on and off duty, will be stepped up. LEST WE FORGET!
