(Wikimedia/Tim Vickerman) The Affectionate Mother Kannon statue at the Narita-san Temple in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan stands 203ft tall and reportedly cost 2 billion yen (or around US$50 million today) to build, according to the Kurume Bureau of Tourism. She may look simple, but the dot on her forehead is actually encrusted with 18 three-carat diamonds, and her ornamental necklace contains an arrangement of a crystal and 56 jade stones. The statue features an observation deck (accessible by climbing 88 marble steps) inside, where visitors can take in views of scenic Mount Unzen.
