16-06-2013: An urgent appeal to the international community, whose humanitarian bodies must meet their responsibilities under international law to protect civilians being subjected to collective and lethal punishment and act urgently to save the lives of tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of Syrian civilians, including women and children, in the besieged and devastated East Ghouta region of Damascus province. In the East Ghouta region of Damascus province, as across rebel-controlled areas across Syria, the Assad regime is systematically starving the people and denying them medical and humanitarian aid. In East Ghouta, a regime siege has cut off all incoming supplies of food and medicine, having cut off all water and electricity supplies for over eight months. In the East Ghouta region alone, over 1.5 million Syrian citizens, including at least 200,000 women and children, are being subjected to slow starvation, as well as to daily bombardment by regime aerial and/or ground forces, in contravention of all international laws. The Syrian Network for Human Rights estimates that the besieged cities and towns in the region need a minimum of 180 tons of flour per day simply to make bread to survive on. They are being denied this, as well as all other incoming food and medical supplies and humanitarian aid.
