16 November 1978: Wesley Orr, 53-year-old Protestant civilian, married with 3 children, a fireman was fighting a fire at the Ulster Brewery on the Glen Road when he was murdered by an explosion caused by an IRA bomb. A number of armed men drove up outside the gate at 8:20AM and held up the security guard. The driver then drove a few hundred yards up to the warehouse where he planted the bomb and then returned to the gates to pick up his accomplice. A few minutes later, the bomb exploded. Sub-officer Orr and a number of other firemen just entered the building when a 2nd bomb exploded. Mr Orr took the full force of the bomb. He was taken to Musgrave Hospital where he died shortly afterwards. The other firemen suffered only minor injuries. Mr Orr was from Craig Crescent, Lisburn. He was in the fire service for 35 years and was in charge of the Lisburn section. His colleagues buried him with full honours. Firemen from Dublin and Clones walked behind the fire appliance that was carrying Mr Orrs coffin. LEST WE FORGET!
