16165/1335/91 of 365 (01 April 2014): It’s the Dogs’ Day (photo 3: Skitter Bug) As if there could be a world Of absolute innocence In which we forget ourselves The owners throw sticks And half-bald tennis balls Toward the surf And the happy dogs leap after them As if catapulted— Black dogs, tan dogs, Tubes of glorious muscle— Pursuing pleasure More than obedience They race, skid to a halt in the wet sand, Sometimes theyll plunge straight into The foaming breakers Like diving birds, letting the green turbulence Toss them, until they snap and sink Teeth into floating wood Then bound back to their owners Shining wet, with passionate speed For nothing, For absolutely nothing but joy. The Dogs at Live Oak Beach, Santa Cruz, by Alicia Ostriker Today is the dogs’ birthday. Skitter Bug (aka: the Catahoula Cuss Hound, her Majesty, Queen of all She Surveys, the Diva Dog, etc. etc. etc.) is six years old today. Another rescue, she came from Louisiana as a runt and from the moment I met her, I knew she was my special familiar. We love to swim together in the Ohio River. She’s as moody as I am and deeply thoughtful. Digger of holes, warmer of the backs of my knees in winter, hound who shakes with fear in storms, “whatever happens, save Skitter first”…she’s my Loki Anubis Catahoula dear.
