#16days update from Lucknow: We organized the concluding event of 16 days of activism against domestic violence “Ab to Jago” by releasing an official banner in the presence of Ms. Zarina Usmani (Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission), Ms. Sutapa Sanyal (ADG, Mahila Samman Prakosht U.P. Police) and Justice K.S.Rakra (former judge at Allahabad High Court). Here’s what each of them had to say to the attendees which included 700+ people, including those from civil society groups across the state: Ms. Usmani: “Onus lies on all of us to raise our voices against women so that women can take true breath of emancipation. We have to break these boundaries initially right from our family and change the perspective of society … especially the new generation towards violence against women.” Justice K.S. Rakra: “The increasing numbers of the crimes against women is a manifestation of our patriarchal thinking. Women need to break from those shackles. There is a lack of gender sensitivity among police and judiciary – this is an immediate prerequisite for women in the event of violence. In our system we do counselling of the survivor but not of the culprit of violence.” Ms. Sutapa Sanyal: “There is a social cause to undermine the women and it comes out from the manifestation of our thinking. Along with the people there is a need for police to change their mindsets and thinking. For this we are organizing trainings and trying to sensitize them.”
