#17: Blue Ruin Despite how bloated the genre can be, I love revenge movies to death. Sometimes Im willing to forgive some familiarity in a revenge film to see how creative its kills and its acting can be. However, Blue Ruin is unlike any revenge film Ive seen in a long time and that it gets the act of vengeance out of the way in the first twenty minutes and spends the rest of its time contemplating those consequences. There is nothing over-the-top about this understated meditation on violence, especially its would-be hero who is interestingly balanced between barely competent and quietly disturbed. This is an independent darling that was beautifully shot, exceptionally well-written, and left me captivated from start to finish. Originally, I put this on from my Netflix queue just to fall asleep to something, but it grabbed me so fiercely that I could not look away from it for even a second. This was another great surprise of the year and certainly one of my favorites.
