170 years ago today Joseph Smith the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was martyred in Carthage Illinois. Two weeks after the fact in the New York Weekly Herald. The headline reads: “Important News from Nauvoo: Death of Joe and Hyrum Smith: Terrible Excitement in the West.” In part the article said, “We yesterday received by western mail the following particulars of the death of Joseph Smith the Prophet and his brother Hyrum. They were both shot. There was tremendous excitement in the west in consequence of their death” (8 July 1844). The article continued and then ended with this three-word conclusion and prediction: “Thus ends Mormonism.” On April 6th 1830 in a small log cabin The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was organized with only 6 members. Today Church membership exceeds 15 million. There are over 29,253 congregations, over 83,000 full time missionaries and 143 Temples. Surely if the editor of the New York Weekly Herald was alive today he would rethink those last 3 words “Thus ends Mormonism.” The reality is Mormonism or The Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ was just beginning!
