18 LIVES SAVED THIS WINTER: Thats what we truly hope for. Its hard to believe that for less than the cost of a ONE-night stay in a hotel, you can actually provide LIFE-SAVING warmth to an individual staying outside, not for one night, but potentially for months, or longer if need be, by providing them with something as simple as a backpack bed (tinyurl/p4aetb9). Tonight we donated 18 backpack beds to The Metanoia Project (metanoiaproject.org/) here in downtown Cleveland, OH. In one week we will be joining Jim from this great group to perform outreach to the homeless; where we will distribute some of these beds to those who are shelter-resistant and who often live under bridges, in abandoned buildings, and outside most of the year. With each backpack bed we also are including a fleece throw, 2 mylar blankets, and 2 hand/body warmers, to provide even extra warmth against the cold weather this year. We know that temperatures even in just the 30s can be deadly to those living outside without adequate shelter (tinyurl/lmlevoy). Avoiding hypothermia is key. It is the cause of at least 1,500 deaths a year in the United States. In 2012, 74 homeless people alone died in the Cleveland area, with ... most passing from the hardships of living without a home, according to the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (tinyurl/nw8f9no). We also remember the near record lows Cleveland saw in January 2014, and hope to avoid those bitter cold temperatures from claiming some lives of those living outside this winter. Want to help save a life here in Cleveland? ... consider sharing a link to: BackpackFundraiser.org, where all proceeds raised will go towards the purchase of backpack beds for individuals in need in this area, whose lives may just very well depend on it.
